About Me
I became a therapist for two main reasons:
1) I enjoy philosophy, and the concept of therapy is inherently philosophical in nature. We explore deep questions and problems without clear solutions, together, as partners in a philosophical journey.
2) I like getting in people's business. Some people worry their therapist is bored of them. I am never bored of you. Complain about your ex again, tell me what you had for breakfast this week, or describe your weird dream to me. Often, the most mundane things in your life are also the most relevant to what we're working on in each session.
My name is Ruth, and I provide therapy for all things related to communication and intimacy: married with trouble communicating? struggling with jealousy or unclear boundaries in a polyamorous relationship? having a difference in opinion over child-rearing? something missing in the bedroom? All these things are my forte.
My primary modalities are Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (A goal-focused approach that centers on identifying and building on what's already working) and Existentialist psychotherapy (exploring questions of meaning, freedom, and authentic choice in the face of life's inherent uncertainty). With couples and polycules I also employ the Gottman Method, a technique that focuses on building a foundation of friendship between intimate partners. I'm a straight shooter and won't beat around the bush with you, but I also will be compassionate if I have to call you out. And you are welcome to call me out, too!
Before joining the mental health field, I worked in roles as a sex educator, a biogeochemistry researcher, and a competitive climbing team coach. In my free time I lift weights, bake, and play piano. During in-person sessions, my Medical Alert Service Dog will be present; he does not interact with clients. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out and I will be happy to discuss.
